Time to change the "Tweet" links for Picture of the Day and Media of the Day
Per the clear consensus I will remove the link from the template. GPSLeo (talk) 09:11, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
I just removed the other one as well. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:35, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

Twitter has changed quite significantly since these links were originally put in place, and it seems time to think about getting rid of them. Daniel Mietchen (talk) 10:35, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Support It would be best avoiding Twitter/X. Yann (talk) 10:38, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Support I really don't see a need. Let's just avoid X. ─ The Aafī (talk) 12:52, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. I would suggest replacing it with a link to the fedi-share tool, to promote sharing on the Fediverse. Legoktm (talk) 04:14, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

Duplicate arguments in template calls
The following arguments of Main Page Template are duplicated and only the last values are used:
Announcement Title
Announcement Text
-- ato (talk) 12:08, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Because there are apparently two announcements? One of the WLA and the other WLF, and WLF appears at the last, so its values are used. ─ Aafī (talk) 14:20, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Exactly. And the Main Page landed in Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls, below Category:Pages with incorrect template usage. -- ato (talk) 11:21, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

Adding Wikifunctions to the sister project's list
Hi all! Is it possible to add Wikifunctions to the list of sister projects? Thanks in advance! Sannita (WMF) (talk) 14:11, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support I looked into implementing this, but it seems to be a rabbit hole of many nested templates. Perhaps @AntiCompositeNumber: could implement it, since it looks like they set up the system? It seems logical to replace mediawiki with wikifunctions to keep a 4x3 array of links. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 08:58, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel, Sannita (WMF) Sure, it's possible. The complicating factor, as always, is that Commons has about 133 main pages, not just one. These pages are largely not standardized, with many not showing the same list of sister projects. I got through migrating a few dozen to use {{Sisterprojects layout}} before I got bored and found better things to do, User:AntiCompositeNumber/sisterprojects has the list. If you want to just change it on the English Main Page, then you can change
|mw-name=
,|mw-desc=
,|mw-logo=
, and|mw-link=
on {{Sisterprojects-en}}. There's no need for the parameter names to match the actual link/content as long as you set all 4, there are multiple main pages that do that for sorting reasons. Changing it on every main page that uses {{Sisterprojects layout}} is a bigger task, and changing every main page that doesn't use the template an even bigger one. I can change the template if there's multilingual consensus to do so, but I don't really have the time to copy-paste translations into templates these days. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:52, 5 May 2024 (UTC)- @AntiCompositeNumber: Thanks for the background. Why can't we simplify this to just use a single template, and use existing translations from translatewiki.net? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:58, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel Some main pages use localized logos, some use language-specific sort orders, both of which make a single template more complex. Translations as MediaWiki messages would work, but using the Translate extension wouldn't because of the need for page protection. When I was working on this I did not seek consensus to significantly change the main pages and was trying to keep it as non-controversial as possible. Adding recently promoted quality images?
At Commons:Quality Images we have around 100 photos being promoted every day: could we highlight these on the main page? I can set up a bot script that will auto-update a list of selected images to show, perhaps on an hourly basis, and I've set up a demo of how it could look like at User:Mike Peel/Main Page. Thoughts? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:03, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support This is a great idea, Mike. One thing I miss in Commons is to make great images more relevant and visible, so we can attract more photographers. I would add a link to the Quality Images section, so people know that this exists. Theklan (talk) 09:07, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support I also support this. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 10:50, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel, I don't oppose but this creates a lot more space towards right bottom on my screen. Currently it is meagre and I don't worry - is there a solution? Perhaps move Participating part around? ─ Aafī (talk) 12:58, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Moved over to the right in the demo, does that look better? I think there needs to be a more general refresh of the homepage, including reducing text, but that's a topic for another day. ;-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:52, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

- Support A good initiative in my eyes, too. Poco a poco (talk) 13:19, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support, this looks great and it will be really nice to have more frequently updating content. But agree it might be sensible to move the Participating section to the right column for balance, especially for when we don't have something like WLE running. the wub "?!" 13:48, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support yes, please. This would be so good for the community. --MB-one (talk) 18:25, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support I support this. Celestinesucess (talk) 18:36, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support It's long overdue to make the Main page more interesting and lively. However, I oppose only new quality images being featured which biases it toward recently promoted images and excludes previous ones while not making use of other things that could be used to identify high-quality images to show there. Also it would be nice if it was changing the image every few seconds with there being a pause button as well as slideshow buttons. Please make it show the subject (as on Commons:Quality images) with a link to the relevant category for every image (it could be shown on hover like the file-title). Prototyperspective (talk) 22:26, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective: I have in mind a practical way to implement this while QICbot does the work of promoting the new quality images, and changing things every hour is feasible. I have no idea how to include all quality images ever, nor how to update them here every few seconds. If you do know how to do that, please do so? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 23:05, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
Shouldn't Template talk:Main Page Template redirect to here?
I just came across Template talk:Main Page Template - shouldn't that redirect to here? to keep conversations together? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:36, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support Yes, it makes sense. Yann (talk) 19:46, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- The template is used on pages other than the English main page, and the various language main pages traditionally have been managed at least somewhat separately. This means that there is wide variation between the main pages, even among all the main pages that use the template. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:53, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
