This is the requests and votes page, a centralized place where you can keep track of ongoing user requests, and where you can comment and leave your vote. Any user is welcome to comment on these requests, and any logged in user is welcome to vote.

When requesting rights that do not need the support of the community (e.g. filemover) please go to Commons:Requests for rights!

How and where to apply for additional user rights on Commons[edit]

All applications made on the above pages are automatically transcluded onto this page.

How to comment and vote[edit]

Any logged-in user is welcome to vote and to comment on the requests below. Votes from unregistered users are not counted, but comments may still be made. If the nomination is successful, a bureaucrat will grant the relevant rights. However, the closing bureaucrat has discretion in judging community consensus, and the decision will not necessarily be based on the raw numbers. Among other things, the closing bureaucrat may take into account the strength of any arguments presented and the experience and knowledge of the commenting users. For example, the comments and votes of users who have zero or few contributions on Commons may at the bureaucrat's discretion be discounted.

It is preferable if you give reasons both for  Support votes or  Oppose ones as this will help the closing bureaucrat in their decision. Greater weight is given to argument, with supporting evidence if needed, than to a simple vote.

Scheduled to end: 14:47, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello, I'm Aurelio. I would like to request administrator tools to handle copyright violations, such as copyvios, previously I have already nominated copyvio images very well, unfortunately in some months I was not active due to problems with my PC or cell phone, but I have been active now that they have already resolved these issues. I say goodbye for now, vote and say if I can be an administrator Aurelio de Sandoval (Mensajes aquí please) 14:47, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Votes[edit]

  •  Oppose (regretfully). While I do think this request is well-intentioned, I do have concerns regarding activity levels. You have only made 500 edits since July 28, 2023 (more than 9 months ago as of typing this). Do come back after your activity levels increase over a continuous period, though! --SHB2000 (talk) 07:17, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SHB2000 Yes, I had problems with my PC and I didn't have a cell phone to work with, that's why I couldn't. Aurelio de Sandoval (Mensajes aquí please) 21:44, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That still doesn't explain that 300 of those 500 edits were in the last week. SHB2000 (talk) 01:48, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
and just after one week they request adminship. I do appreciate Aurelio but I don't think it's the time for them. More activity is truly needed before thinking of another RFA Bedivere (talk) 02:48, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Neutral  Weak Support We always need more Spanish-speaking admins, but activity is sporadic, with 300ish edit bursts 24-48 hrs prior to this RFA being posted . Changing to weak support on the condition of returning to active editing. Thank you for your work at license review! All the best -- Chuck Talk 15:47, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Alachuckthebuck My activity on Wikimedia had been reduced because I had not had a PC or cell phone to work, now I do have the means. Aurelio de Sandoval (Mensajes aquí please) 21:40, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Weak oppose - Per concerns over activity levels. Seawolf35 (talk) 15:52, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Weak oppose per above. --Bedivere (talk) 17:09, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose, unfortunately, per SHB. Queen of Hearts (not related) 17:15, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose per above. Concerns with minimal recent activity levels -Fastily 05:18, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support - 2 edits per day are not that bad. If 500 edits in 9 month be the only cause for opposing, I can not really follow. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 05:33, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Weak oppose the answers worry me a bit because I don't see understanding of some key elements of deletion requests (URAA per Q2, the fact that Commons should not decide whether an image is "accurate" and that should be left to local projects per Q5). Also the answer to Q1 is a clear misunderstanding of the question - it is about the application of INUSE and the superseded image policy, not threshold of originality (that is not relevant here). While I understand some of this can be attributed to mistranslation, I still think without a proper grasp on policy, it will be hard to justify supporting adminship, as actions on Commons have the potential to affect the whole of Wikimedia. If the candidate was more active in areas such as Commons:Deletion requests, I would wholeheartedly support adminship. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 20:35, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose. Q1. Sometimes such logos should be deleted as out of project scope. Q2. At first, USA demands 95 years from publication and the photo is copyrighted. At second, fact that I and you do not know the author does not mean anonymous. German photographs need evidence of anonimity. Q4. This is question of scope. Some "quite obscure" things are notable nevertheless and if we have only few photos about it, deletion would be wrong. But some "quite obscure" things are non-notable. Q5. Usually I say to user: at first upload new version, then nominate for deletion. And sometimes even old and outdated versions should be kept to show history. Taivo (talk) 09:37, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comments[edit]

Question Do you see yourself doing other admin work outside of copyvios, and if so, what areas? All the best -- Chuck Talk 15:49, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Alachuckthebuck If, for example, delete images that are not in the public domain, or restore images that were deleted by mistake and that were suitable for Wikimedia Aurelio de Sandoval (Mensajes aquí please) 21:43, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Protect pages to avoid vandalism. Aurelio de Sandoval (Mensajes aquí please) 21:43, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question I see you haven't been that active on Commons lately, but I'm sure that will change once you acquire adminship. Regardless, here are a few questions about common DRs (feel free to answer inline btw), answer with your first thoughts (of course this may change through the course of the discussion). —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 17:52, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Someone nominates File:Random logo.png for deletion with the rationale "redundant to File:Random logo.svg". Assume File:Random logo.png is not INUSE.
  2. Someone nominates a 1945 WW2 photo was published in 1945 in Germany. Assume the author is anonymous per Template:PD-anon-70-EU.
  3. Someone nominates a company logo for deletion with the rationale "copyright violation".
  4. Someone nominates a photo that they made 5 years ago for deletion stating "I don't want it on the internet anymore". The photo's subject is quite obscure and we don't have many photos of that subject. Assume no GDPR or related issues.
  5. Someone nominates a photo for deletion stating the data is unreliable and out of date. They provide a link to the correct data but haven't uploaded a file yet with the correct data. The file is in use on multiple projects.
@Matrix
1- It varies if the logo does not exceed the threshold of originality, if they are just geometric figures there can be no problem, Otherwise, if it were with logos from China because its originality threshold is quite low.
2- The photograph is fine since the time determined for it to be in the public domain has passed, more now that you take into account that they have passed 79 years.
3- It would have to be reviewed if this logo does not exceed the threshold of originality.
4- Well, this site has photographs of that type, so they could not be deleted.
5- It would have to be reviewed check if the data is correct and if it is a photo where years have passed, review the year. Aurelio de Sandoval (Mensajes aquí please) 20:15, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requests for permission to run a bot[edit]

Before making a bot request, please read the new version of the Commons:Bots page. Read Commons:Bots#Information on bots and make sure you have added the required details to the bot's page. A good example can be found here.

When complete, pages listed here should be archived to Commons:Bots/Archive.

Any user may comment on the merits of the request to run a bot. Please give reasons, as that makes it easier for the closing bureaucrat. Read Commons:Bots before commenting.

Bot's tasks for which permission is being sought: adding pHash checksum (P9310) and Imagehash difference hash (P12563) values to the photos.

Documentation for the hashes
Example images with P9310 and P12563 values

First targets are photos from Europeana, Estonian, Finland, Sweden and Flickr, but long term target is to add imagehashes to all commons photos. Currently we have used FinnaUploadBot for Finna images. Reason for the new account is to make dedicated account and service for the non Finna related edits.

What is use for such hashes? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:47, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One can use them to compare the similarity of pictures by checking how much the identifiers differ to detect duplicates and match photos in different repositories. We have used image hashes to prevent duplicates when uploading files and to prevent the wrong photos from being updated when reuploading photos from Finna with better quality and/or updating metadata. --Zache (talk) 16:31, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Such hashes make much more sense as part of Commons database. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:26, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In SDC they are filemetadata and in particular using SPARQL it would be easy way for querying and sharing the hashes for external usage. Ie. it is part of metadata for the files. Zache (talk) 14:52, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, even if the information would be added to the Wikimedia Commons database (there are good technical reasons why one would like to use an external service instead of adding this to the MediaWiki core), I would like to note that we are populating SDC values from the Commons internal database using bots. Most notable in this context are the SHA-1 checksum, mime type, image width, and image height. (Commons:Structured data/Modeling/Meta) And yes, there would be probaply better ways to do this, but currently using bots is the preferred method. --Zache (talk) 06:42, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any community discussion that such data shall be generated at large scale? Krd 06:53, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am not aware that there would have been a wider discussion. Current discussions, to my knowledge, are related to the Fæ's User:Fæ/Imagehash and village pump discussions 1 and 2. In my structured data property proposal in 2021, there were no follow-up comments in Wikimedia Commons. Phabricator has some tickets (for example, phab:T121797) related to image hashing.
Also, just for background, I am running ImageHash-Toolforge, which has approximately 25% of Wikimedia Commons bitmap images (jpg, tiff, png) indexed with phash and dhash. I also made a Wikimania lightning talk proposal for it. (Proposals are currently under review.) My current idea was to proceed gradually when adding values to SDC, and my current personal need was to add hashes to European and Estonian photos before the Wikimedia Hackathon, Tallinn, in May so they would be available there. (see my question in Commons_talk:Bots/Requests#Extending_FinnaUploadBot).
However, if you think I should do the village pump discussion or the discussion on the Structured Data talk pages, I am happy to start these. --Zache (talk) 07:49, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me. Some files have duplicate {{Taken with}} tags like File:Zukovskiy industrial railway 2022-10 1664723936.JPG for example. Would it be possible to remove the dupes on the fly when dealing with the files? --Achim55 (talk) 18:49, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There was some manual inserted templates. Taken on and Taken with are completly diffirent templates, one for date, second for camera. I can not now to automatically edit Taken with template, it need complicated investigation of EXIF camera tags, witch allways differs from real camera names. Svetlov Artem (talk) 08:57, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What is the reason to do such edits, in which way does it improve the file page? Is there any community discussion about doing this at large scale? --Krd 06:58, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
