--Rosenzweig τ 11:57, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Linking my wikimedia account to my personal website edit

Is there a way that I can link my account to my personal website so those who see my photos can be directed to my website as well? Thank you. Abby Imani (talk) 12:36, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Abby Imani: Your user page may mention your personal website. Please don't be overly promotional in how you do this. - Jmabel ! talk 14:04, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Well noted. Abby Imani (talk) 15:34, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sure, one simple way is to create your user page User:Abby Imani and place a normal web link to your website there, possibly with some text about you. Thus, if the "author" field of your photos link to your user page, as it normally does by default, viewers can easily go to your website in two clicks. Or you can link your name from the "author" field of the photos directly to your website instead of linking to your user page. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:05, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Abby Imani (talk) 15:35, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Abby Imani if your website supports "rel=me" meta tags, you can even use the mediawiki realme extension to verify the connection (see in your preferences, first tab). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 19:54, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

User talk:Keksikeke edit

Hello, all those pictures are uploaded by me ( my user name is keksikeke) and they are pictures of me. I am singer, songwriter. I have pay all those pictures and I own copyright for them. so there should not be any problem. Maybe " Estopedist1" want to make some harm for me? Am I right? Here are my artist links so You can see I am real person and real singer & songwriter and my songs really are played in finnish radio stations so that wikipedia has for example used by radio persons in their speaks when my music is played on the radio. So my pictures are mine and they are free to use when It is about my music and so on...

Wikipedia: fi:Antti Kuosmanen (muusikko)

Sincerely, Antti Kuosmanen Keksikeke (talk) 16:37, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

This is obviously false: EXIF in File:Antti Kuosmanen.jpg says Author Jussi Eerola, Copyright holder: Jussi Eerola. Yann (talk) 16:44, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
EXIF can be wrong. Nonetheless, User:Keksikeke would be advised to follow the process at Com:VRT (or to ask the photographer to) to explain the back ground. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:58, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Processed Screenshot from Google Maps edit

The following image File:Lageplan des Klosters Sainte-Marie de la Tourette.jpg was part of my lecture note at the FH Cologne in 1995. It is an adapted and transformed screenshot from Google Maps and has been requested for deletion. I know that Google Maps is the source but not the author. Authors are aerial photographic firms as subcontractors which are unknown. Is the additional information, which I added sufficient for a Wikimedia Commons use? Peter Christian Riemann (talk) 10:40, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Peter Christian Riemann: Hi,
No amount of information will change the fact that this is a derivative work of a map copyrighted by Google. You would need the permission from Google to publish it under a free license, which you obviously wouldn't get. Yann (talk) 10:58, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks I was afraid of this outcome, so the image has to be deleted. Peter Christian Riemann (talk) 12:04, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Google Maps was launched in February 2005. If you used that photograph in 1995, it cannot be from Google Maps. What is the actual source? --Rosenzweig τ 10:59, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Remove background from images edit

Hello everyone, recently I uploaded six images of statues:

In the background you can clearly see wires of the railroad behind them. My question is if someone could remove these wires and then also make the background transparent. I have tried it with several free tools on the internet, but either it doesn't work or the quality is lost. I would like the images to be uploaded as new versions of the files. So not as new files, but as replacements (jpg format). I would be happy to hear if anyone would like to do this for me! Kind regards, S. Perquin (talk) 17:55, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@S. Perquin: Hello, You can make a request at the Commons:Graphic Lab. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:07, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Roberto.Amerighi: Ciao e benvenuto. Sì, consulta {{Cc-by-4.0}}.

Hi, and welcome. Yes, please see {{Cc-by-4.0}}.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:51, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Roberto.Amerighi: Hi, No, you cannot take the personal initiative to issue a license CC-BY 4.0 on a photo like the photo in your example, which is tagged with "BCS", not with CC-BY 4.0. Note that the CC-BY 4.0 in the description page is for the metadata, not the photo. The pictured object is in the public domain. The photo is probably in the public domain in Italy. However, it might be possible to upload the photo to Commons if the photo can be determined to be in the public domain in the United States. It may be the case or not. The photo might be in the public domain or it might be non-free, but it is not CC-BY 4.0 because CC-BY 4.0 is explicitly excluded by the website for such photos. The problem with that source website is that it does not specify the initial origins of the photos, the photographers and who owns or owned the international copyrights. It is a complex situation. There is an ongoing discussion about it on this page. I suggest to wait until that discussion gets closed one way or the other and then act accordingly. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:56, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Asclepias: Sorry, I was misled by the metadata license.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:56, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Possibly. If you would link to the file page of the particular image, it is a lot more likely that someone could give you a good answer. - Jmabel ! talk 07:02, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
We are (mostly) not lawyers, and cannot give legal advice. Do I need to get permission? edit

I want to upload a picture from the following website: [3]https://jasminesherman.com/download-share/

On the website, it tells people to “download and share these images”. Do I still have to get permission from Ms. Sherman? LordBirdWord (talk) 20:22, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@LordBirdWord: That's not an open licence (It doesn't allow images to be modified, for instance), so overall, yes, you would need to get permission, in the form of an open licence.
That said, some of the images are derivatives of other copyright material, so are unlikely ever to be openly licensed. Others may not meet the threshold of originality, so are not subject to copyright.
We'd need to know exactly which image you have in mind, before we can advise further. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:40, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Own page edit

Hi, I've been asked to create a Wiki page of myself. I am a. female pilot who has made 3 solo Pacific Ocean crossings, and have made contributions to aviation. How do I, or how does someone else do this? Dreamer111111 (talk) 01:30, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

This is not Wikipedia, but Wikimedia Commons, where we don't write biographies, but we host media files that can be used elsewhere. If you need help with Wikipedia in English, you can ask questions here: w:en:WP:TEAHOUSE. If you are looking to write about yourself, I strongly recommend that you see w:en:WP:COI and w:en:WP:NOTABLE. —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:33, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Not to mention en:Wikipedia:Autobiography, the nutshell description of which is, "Avoid writing or editing an article about yourself (or paying someone else to do so), other than to correct unambiguous errors of fact." It sounds like you have some impressive achievements, but you are literally the last person on Earth who should write about them in Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 06:02, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wrote a reply here:[4]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:04, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Dreamer111111 however, you can upload images and video here at commons. For example media that you created on your flights or maybe from conferences you participated in. The media you upload can then be used in an article about you or for every other use. If you choose for example a cc-by license you will be mentioned when one of the media is used. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 13:17, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Dreamer111111, allow me to paraphrase @Justin. Even though you might be "literally the last person on Earth who should write about them in Wikipedia", you are quite literally the only person who could have photographed yourself during the solo flight. Such photographs are certainly needed ! FocalPoint (talk) 20:58, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Certainly. To be clear, User:FocalPoint, I wasn't the one who wrote "literally the last person..." and also to be clear, having a biography on Wikipedia is different than a picture here on Commons. Your point about taking a selfie in a specialized context is very correct! If you have photos of yourself that you think is educational and meets our requirements for licensing, then it would be great to add it here. If you are struggling with how to add files here such as photos, let me know. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:00, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Justin, correct, my mistake, it was @Jmabel who wrote it ! FocalPoint (talk) 21:11, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
And I agree with what everyone has said here about photos, which are welcome. I was responding to "I've been asked to create a Wiki page of myself," which presumably meant a Wikipedia article; the original question made no mention of photos or any other media uploads. - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Emiseo: It would help a lot to say what country you are based in and to point to a page that contains the relevant logo so we can see what we are talking about. Copyright issues vary from country to country, and depend on how simple or complex the logo is, so it's much more efficient to talk about a specific case. - Jmabel ! talk 22:56, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
This is probably the en:Society for Applied Spectroscopy of the USA, which seems to have a new logo on its website. TSventon (talk) 14:30, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Emiseo: This is a little tricky. It looks like the old logo was released into the public domain by its designer. Is that the case again, or is someone retaining a copyright this time (as against just a trademark)? The instructions will be totally different based on the answer to that question, so let us know and someone can proceed from there. - Jmabel ! talk 14:40, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Copyrighted flags? edit

Hello. I imagine the two flags at the second picture here [6] are copyrighted. The flags (they're actually the two sides of one) were adopted in 1892. However this digital drawing is obviously not from then. The flags I think do pass the threshold of originality from my own judgement. According to the picture the source of the flags would be this 1995 book [7] but the organization represented by the flag does not seem to be mentioned in the book. The organization is the Macedo-Romanian Cultural Society, a private cultural organization in Romania that does not belong to the state. I just created an article for it in English Wikipedia and want to use the flags. Should I upload them here or there per fair use? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 22:21, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

The only thing there that I can really imagine having copyright is the branches (mlădițe). Romulus & Remus are almost certainly a copy of something much older; the tricolor certainly can't be copyrighted, and I doubt the arrangement can be. @Super Dromaeosaurus: I take it you disagree, though. Can you say why? - ~
Well I don't disagree, I'd love to be able to upload the flags, I just imagined it would not be possible. I'm not very well-informed on copyright issues anyway. So you say it is okay if I upload both flags in Commons? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 09:29, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'd actually appreciate other opinions here, because my rationale is a combination of the use of old elements, the simplicity of the design, the date of the overall design, etc. As I said, the biggest issue I see is the branches. Does anyone have a strong opinion on whether they are enough to make it copyrightable? - Jmabel ! talk 14:42, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@GPT externalcomms: In short, upload under a new filename, then change the logo.
If the new logo is either below the threshold of originality (so it can't be copyrighted, just trademarked) or if you are free-licensing it (again, presumably retaining trademark) you can upload it here on Commons. Otherwise, it must be directly uploaded to the English-language Wikipedia as a non-free logo. See en:File:3D Entertainment.jpg for a good example of doing that. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Maintenance for errors in a cropped file wanted edit

I have made a crop resulting in the image File:View from ISS on Monte Rosa mountain massif with highest Swiss mountain Dufourspitze, June 2022 - ISS067-E-152529 - View of Earth (cropped and edited).jpg some days ago. Two issues arose: The original image had 4 annotations, which are now (maybe not exactly precise, my observation) id 1 to id 4 in the new image. The further about 8 annotations (making about 12 alltogether) were added by another user after my crop and are good. Hence, the original 4 annotations are wrong (and are not shown, as they have the old image dimensions, much larger) and should be deleted (I could try myself but have observed very strange errors when editing annotations in the past, so I refrain). This was issue one. Second issue: The camera location data lowermost in the infobox somehow evolved into something wrong during the crop, so that now, a red error message is shown instead. I tried to analyze the code to remedy this, but did not find any location data in the cropped file at all, just "location" without any data behind. It would be nice if the original location info could be restored, but I would be perfectly ok if just the error message vanishes, and no location info is provided. Thanks in advance, Pittigrilli (talk) 11:32, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Pittigrilli: I suppose you can just remove the wrong annotations. The good annotations can be renamed 1-8. The location coordinates are in the structured data of the source file. You could copy them to the extracted file, in the location template or in the structured data. However, those coordinates locate the camera in Italy. Was the satellite above Italy for this photo of Switzerland? -- Asclepias (talk) 14:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Asclepias: Interesting observation, this may very well be the case with Italy. In fact, the border between Italy and Switzerland runs just along the Monte Rosa massif, hence the camera position might just be (theoretically) some inches or some km inside Italy, which would be roughly at the lower (and somewhat right) image border. I deleted the wrong annotation sections and renumbered the correct ones, worked out well. I have a hard time though with copying the location from the structured data section of the original file (something with the format), could sb please do that? Pittigrilli (talk) 18:26, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Image Upload Issue edit

Hi, I am trying to update the picture profile on a page and it will not let me replace it with the current image I have, it says that it cannot determine whether the photo is suitable for Wikipedia Commons. How do I prove that I own the image? Dsteinmetz (talk) 15:14, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Dsteinmetz: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Screenshots provided by developers edit

Hi, working on an article about a video game. I want to include screenshots that the developers posted on their public blog to show viewers the gameplay. Is this acceptable to upload to the Commons, as this seems to fall under press material? Can provide a link if needed. Squiddyonwiki (talk) 20:27, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Squiddyonwiki: Hi,
Press material is not accepted on Commons. We need a release with a free license, preferably CC-BY-SA-4.0. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Yann (talk) 21:51, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unable to upload edit

Is it just me? I kept on encountering error (e.g. [52128309-4cbe-4dd3-aff9-3537c5cdb63b] 2024-05-04 13:33:44: Fatal exception of type "JobQueueError") when trying to upload, this happens regardless of using the modern Upload Wizard or the legacy Upload Wizard. Technical issue edit

Hi. I think I might have made an error when creating a deletion request here. I noticed that the prefix "File:" is missing before the file's name. Is it something that can be resolved with a page move or should I ask for an administrator's help? Sorry if all of this sounds trivial. I'm mostly active on English Wikipedia, not on the Commons so I'm not 100% familiar with the rules and regulations. Best. Keivan.fTalk 18:48, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

The DR seems fine to me. It's linked to the file, and you notified the uploader. Abzeronow (talk) 19:03, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Abzeronow Thank you so much for your response. I'm glad the set up is fine. My only concern was the way it had been titled but that does not appear to be an issue I guess. Best. Keivan.fTalk 20:09, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

謝謝--125.230.72.73 23:00, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Is this revocation reasonable and correct?

I was corrected a while ago, so I wanted to ask for advice. On a certain photo, I performed two editing actions at the same time in one stroke, one to add category A and the other to modify category B. Later, this edit was revoked. This revocation caused Category B to be changed back and Category A to be removed along with it. I asked the other party why they canceled it, and I found out that the B classification I had modified was wrong. Although I had corrected the wrong classification for B, it was only for B, which meant that there was no problem with A. So I asked him why he also revoked A, but he didn’t respond. Since there is no response, it means that he has no reason for the A classification, so I am suspicious of his revocation. What I suspect is that he actually has a better way that doesn't require the undo action. He can only focus on the B classification and manually modify the wrong classification back. Because he has history and can see the previous difference, he can know what the original correct classification was.

To be honest, I not only can't understand it, but I can't accept it, because this kind of revocation feels like one place is wrong, and everything is wrong, which is unreasonable. This is also the reason for the "dispute". Therefore, I would like to ask everyone, if in the same transaction, the editing content is only classified into B, then there is a problem, but A is not a problem, and I choose to cancel it. Is this correct? If it is correct, please tell me why. Thanks

Editing edit

I've made almost 3,000 Wikipedia edits. 18 April I requested that I be able to edit here. Earlier today I attempted to edit a caption but despite the caption in the box having changed after I clicked Edit and Publish changes the caption itself hasn't changed. Does that mean my request hasn't been granted? Mcljlm (talk) 20:18, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Public Domain Photo Map Altered via Photoshop. Ok to use? edit

Hello, I recently uploaded a public domain photo that I have since gotten altered by someone else. More specifically, the black line in the middle caused by newspaper creasing has been removed via Photoshop. Is altered material alright to use even though it's public domain?
