Upload picture of a public hiking map

Hi I just uploaded a picture of a public hiking map, that is standing outdoors in a small town in Germany. Is that even allowed or is there a copyright issue, because my picture is showing the work of someone else? Incorrect photo of Richard D. Webb

The portrait photo at the top of the Richard D. Webb Wikipedia page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_D._Webb -- is incorrect. It is a photo of John Brown (another abolitionist), but not Richard D. Webb. Several images of Richard D. Possible copyright issue

Hi, I've recently noticed that there is a photo of former Supreme Court of Canada judge de Grandpré, labelled as "public domain", but I don't see the basis for it. It says it was taken in 1968 by "Inconnu" (ie "unknown") and was copied from the webpage of the Barreau de Montréal. Without knowing who took it, it's conceivable that the photographer is still alive, and if deceased, that the 50 year period hasn't expired yet? Could someone who knows more about image copyright take a look at it? Image is : File:Louis-Philippe de Grandpré, 1968.png Thanks Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 13:42, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

@Mr Serjeant Buzfuz: Apparently the source was this webpage at Barreau de Montréal and the uploader upscaled the image, resulting in the poor quality on Commons. The Barreau de Montréal webpage has no detail about the photo. I don't know where the uploader took the year 1968. Maybe it was made up to try to fit into the applicable rules for works of unknown authorship. Anyway, from the looks of the image, that year seems about right, give or take a few years. But a few years can make a difference for the copyright status. A photo of unknown authorship created before 1949 (per the former version of former section 10 of the Copyright Act, in force before 1999, see also Template:PD-Canada) or published before 1970 (per the former version of section 6.1 of the Copyright Act, in force before 2020, see also Template:PD-Canada-anon) is out of copyright in Canada, because its copyright was already expired before the changes to the Copyright Act which came into force in 1999 and 2020 respectively and which were not retroactive. For the discussion, let's accept the year 1968 for the creation and for the publication of the photo File:Louis-Philippe de Grandpré, 1968.png. If it was really of unknown authorship, it could be in the public domain in Canada as Template:PD-Canada-anon, but the Template:PD-Canada and Template:PD-1996 used by the uploader would not be the correct templates. Can the photo be considered of unknown authorship? Per the copyright law of Canada, unknown means that it is not commonly known. Then, what exactly makes it "commonly known" or not? This photo is apparently a studio photo by a professional photographer. The author was certainly known at least to the person who commissioned it. It was certainly not secret. The photographer is possibly identified on the back of the copies. It is possible that the author could be identified with a diligent research. Is it "commonly known" or not? I don't know. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:14, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
I changed the status template to Canada-anon so that it can at least be consistent with the uploader's statements about the author and the year. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:29, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

There is no indication that this account ever has uploaded a file to Commons.
You can upload only images that belong in at least one of the following categories in both their country of origin and in the U.S.:
  • In the public domain, with a clear indication of why they are in the public domain.
  • Images that you created entirely yourself, or where any underlying elements that are not your own creation are in the public domain.
  • Images for which the holder of the copyright has already granted a sufficiently free license and where you can link a source to show that.
  • Images for which the holder of the copyright goes through the VRT process to offer a sufficiently free license (and, if necessary, to demonstrate that they are the copyright-holder).
  • Third-party images where you own the copyright; typically you need to go through VRT to provide documents that demonstrate how you came to own the copyright, though we usually waive that for heirs who are directly related to the original creator.
Obviously, there are some "mix-and-match" variants (e.g. a third party created a work using materials in the public domain, but combining them in a way that generates a copyright, and they then granted a free license; someone going through the VRT process to allow a particular Commons user to operate repeatedly on their behalf; etc.), but that's the gist of it. - Jmabel ! talk 14:57, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

Copyright to assign

We wish to upload photographs of scientific facilities that have been taken by individual staff members as part of our project. To facilitate this process, one person is responsible for uploading and assigning metadata. The individual staff members are aware that any photo will be made freely available (i.e. they do not retain copyright) but we are not sure which CC license to use. Can you help? Km4water (talk) 21:01, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

This does not make sense. Only the holder of the copyright can issue a CC license. You say that "the individual staff members … do not retain copyright". So is this work for hire? (That is, have the staff members signed a contractual document assigning the copyrights of these works?) Or do you mean to say something else?- Jmabel ! talk 05:39, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
@Km4water: If your company is the copyright holder, you will probably need to follow the process at COM:VRT, explaining the situation in an email.
@Abzeronow: ¿Como lo de "después de 1991"? - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Anime would have other creators than Toriyama, and it would be considered a corporate work in the US so my thinking was anime based off Toriyama's work from after 1991 would possibly still be in copyright after 2095 because of the 95 year publication rule for corporate works. J Parkers Imagery

Hi there,

I represent www.jparkers.co.uk and have requested the deletion of all images uploaded by user https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ser_Amantio_di_Nicolao

Is there any way we can expedite this as we need to have all images removed (they were originally uploaded to our Flickr account but have since been deleted due to copyright restrictions)

Thanks JonathanBJP01 (talk) 10:26, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

@JonathanBJP01: Hi,
On what ground do you want to delete these files? They were published under a free license on Flickr, and that license is irrevocable.
And this user uploaded images from different photographers, so I don't see any valid reason why you could request deletion. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:54, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Hi Yann,
In essence, these images were uploaded to our Flickr account by mistake by a junior employee, as they were muddled up with a set of photographs that were owned by jparkers.
We do not own these images, we have purchased the licenses but do not have the rights listed.
Therefore the image owners (our suppliers) have demanded we get these taken down as soon as possible.
Appreciate your comments re free license completely but this was a genuine mistake i'm afraid.
p.s. sorry for multiple deletion requests!
Many thanks

Hi @Yann just wanted to confirm - did you want me to raise the one deletion request for them all or will this be raised by you.

@JonathanBJP01: I can do it for you, but I would like first a confirmation that all images mentioned as from jparkers.co.uk are involved, or only a subset? Yann (talk) 14:13, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Hi@Yann apologies i received an email from Wiki support who have submitted the deletion notification for all 475 images.
I'd like to thank you for your help in this matter.
Many thanks and regards

For the record: Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with "jparkers.co.uk". DRs are usually processed after a week for discussion, but if the license is not valid in the first place, I don't see any objection. Sorry for the procedure, but we have regularly people requesting deletion without valid reason. Yann (talk) 14:33, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
And please stop creating individual deletion requests. This makes dealing with the issue more complicated. Yann (talk) 11:07, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

Does the first bracket "(" need to be separated by a space from the previous letter?

User:P1340 have been in creating categories for Taiwanese celebrities but titles without a space (e.g., Category:Jess Lee(vocalist)), does the first bracket "(" need to be separated by a space from the previous letter? If yes, then can someone please help the creator?

Apart from this, his contributions here shows that he had done the same thing many times before, like Category:In the Morning of La Petite Mort(film), Category:Fragrance of the First Flower(film), Category:The Young Hoodlum(film), Category:Who Killed Cock Robin(Films of Taiwan), Category:Love Fool(Films of Taiwan). I'm worried that he'll continue to do this. @Lijova1: You are probably talking of Commons:Photo challenge. A first step is that the photos have to be uploaded to Commons. Looking at your list of contributions, it seems that you already uploaded the photos. So, that first step is done. The second step is that, on the page Commons:Photo challenge, you can click on the link located at the end of the section "2024 – April – Vertical lines", below the photos of that section. That will take you to the edit box for that page and you follow the instructions for how to format the insertion of your entries there. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:31, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

Fishy own work claim

Hello everyone, I've noticed instances where images are uploaded by undisclosed paid editors, who claim them as their own work. For example, there is this file uploaded by a possible undisclosed paid editor, along with this one and this one, uploaded by now-blocked sock accounts on enwiki. Neither of these images can be located elsewhere on the internet, suggesting that they were likely provided by the individuals who hired these editors to create articles.

In such cases, should these images still be considered as potential copyright violations, warranting speedy deletion, or should they be nominated for deletion? Thank you, GSS (talk) 17:09, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

@GSS: Hi,
Yes, these images are suspicious. If you find an earlier copy on the Internet, please tag them for speedy deletion under a copyright violation rationale. If you don't find a copy, please create a regular deletion request. Yann (talk) 17:28, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for looking at it, Yann. I tried but couldn't find the exact version. Instead, I found this, which is a cropped version of file:Niharika Chouksey.jpg. Can such files still be tagged for speedy deletion even if they are not the same size? I understand that if an image is uploaded to Commons after modification, it would obviously be a case of copyright violation. But what about in reverse, like the one I just shared, where the image on the internet is cropped, but here on Commons, we seem to have the original copy? I want to understand this for future cases.
As for the other two images, they aren't available on the internet. I would have tagged them for missing permission if they weren't uploaded as own work, but since the uploader falsely claimed them as their own work, I will nominate them for deletion and let others decide. GSS (talk) 18:11, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
@GSS: This is not the source of Commons image, so a regular DR is better. Yann (talk) 18:25, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Done, have nominated all three images for deletion. Thank you for your assistance. GSS (talk) 18:44, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

File:Red-and-black Thrush.jpg and File:Sichuan Partridge.jpg are under the non-commercial license CC BY-NC and they cannot be on Wikimedia Commons. You should probably nominate them for speedy deletion. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:04, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

Which hyperlinks should not be included to wiki files?

Is it considered legitimate to include scihub, libgen, anna's archive, yts etc. hyperlinks to wiki file pages? Elena Regina (talk) 13:51, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

You can add external links if there is a reason to do so. For example, to cite a source or re-use or any other reason that is consistent with the Commons principles. If there is no legitimate reason for a link, you should refrain from doing so. Now, there are links that are considered illegal in some jurisdictions. Adding such a link can be risky, you could be prosecuted. However, not by and on commons, but by the representatives of that jurisdiction. Whether you do something like this should depend on your own judgement as to whether it could have negative consequences for you. However, these possible negative consequences are not caused by Commons or Wikipedia, but by an external organisation over which Commons has no influence. If, on the other hand, you insert a link to a legitimate site for which there is no legitimate reason on Commons, you may be sanctioned, not because of the linked site, but because of the inappropriateness of inserting a link at all, regardless of the link target. @Elena Regina: can you give a context for where and how you plan to use these links? Obviously, the technical ability to make external links exists for a reason, but there are limits one where and for what purposes they should be used. - Jmabel ! talk 16:49, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Can you please clarify your reply and specify which limits and purposes? Elena Regina (talk) 17:52, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
@Elena Regina: No, I'm not here to write you a custom manual covering everything someone might want to do with external links. Tell me what you want to do with the links, and I'll help you work out whether that is valid and (if so) how best to do it. - Jmabel ! talk 20:35, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Is there any wiki page or tutorial to consult about this specific subject? Elena Regina (talk) 09:01, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
@Elena Regina: Not to my knowledge. It would be an odd angle to come at the topic. Usually help is about "I'm trying to do such-and-such, how do I do it?" not "What is a full list of problems for which this particular tool is a good solution." - 17:28, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links#Links_to_be_considered
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links#Links_normally_to_be_avoided
It would be interesting to know whether these principles should be applied in all wikis, including Wikimedia Commons, or only within Wikipedia. Elena Regina (talk) 22:15, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

is it okay to upload a photo from a yearbook pre-1989?

i'd like to upload a few photos from a yearbook, but im not sure about copyright. i saw that yearbooks from before 1989 are copyright protected, but i dont know if this means i can upload the photos Bst9jkj (talk) 02:42, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

edit: i meant "yearbooks from before 1989 are not copyright protected" Bst9jkj (talk) 02:43, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
It depends on the country. Assuming your talking about the United States then its copyrighted if there is a notice. Otherwise it probably isn't. --Adamant1 (talk) 02:45, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
  • It depends. See Commons:Hirtle_chart if it is a US publication. Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory for other countries. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:57, 6 April 2024 (UTC== Please get rid of misleading information on a file
@Bst9jkj: if you are not talking U.S., then you are probably on the wrong track with this.
Assuming you are talking U.S.: if you have the yearbook at hand, you should easily be able to determine whether the book has a copyright notice. If it is before 1978 and there is no notice then, yes, it should all be in the public domain. If it is between the start if 1979 and February 28, 1989 and there is no notice, it is highly probable that it is in the public domain. Technically, they could have registered it within five years; personally, I'm not aware of anyone ever doing that for a school yearbook, though someone may know otherwise. - Jmabel ! talk 17:33, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Please remove information currently on a file (at the bottom of the page) that doesn't make any sense

This is the file: File:Young Christian Lady Photographer Drowns.jpg

In the "File usage on Commons" section it incorrectly states:

The following page uses this file: File:HEADLINE - "LEEDS LADY DROWNED OFF FILEY BRIGG - Photographing the Breakers" (Yorkshire post April 18, 1900).jpg (file redirect)"

WRONG!

That file no longer exists so please remove that misleading information which is currently on this file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Young_Christian_Lady_Photographer_Drowns.jpg

The former was because you had put the file in the category "Women with cameras Category: Drowning in engravings", which doesn't exist. Túrelio has replaced it with Category:Women with cameras. Yann has now deleted the redirect at File:HEADLINE - "LEEDS LADY DROWNED OFF FILEY BRIGG - Photographing the Breakers" (Yorkshire post April 18, 1900).jpg so it doesn't appear in the list of uses of the file any more. --bjh21 (talk) 12:19, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

When I use my log in name User:Srbernadette

there is NOTHING under the "File usage on Commons" section

BUT

When I go to access the same file with this "identification" 175.38.37.197 11:33, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

I get this page:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Young_Christian_Lady_Photographer_Drowns.jpg

which DOES have the incorrect link to a file which no longer exists

Please explain (and thanks, I am losing my mind and please be patient with me!)

about image uploading

I'm going to post a text image that shows a chart of characters from a recently premiered work. (Think the image is like File:Homestuck Troll symbols.png) Used font is distributed under the MIT license. That image doesn't include a picture of a character, and I was wondering if I could upload the image. --린눈라단 (talk) 09:21, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Why not? Though the answer would be much more certain if we were able to see the actual image. Ruslik (talk) 19:52, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
Now, I uploaded the image. --린눈라단 (talk) 02:31, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

If the image needs to be deleted can it be moved to Wikipedia as a non-free image? TheSwamphen (talk) 05:19, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
  • It would seem to me that under the URAA copyright restoration, it would be copyrighted in the U.S. until circa 2045 (hard to be precise because it is a circa date on the work). So it probably needs to be deleted and restored some time in 20+ years. - 04:14, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

Of/in

I guess this is more to do with language than with categorization, but, not being a native speaker, I always seem to struggle when it comes to deciding whether to use "of" or "in" for places belonging to other places. I'm pretty sure about provinces (Provinces of X country) and populated places (Populated places in X province), but what about other entities such as communes or prefectures, for instance? Should I use "or" or "in"? Is there a rule of thumb for these? Thanks in advance. Alavense (talk) 18:58, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

@Alavense: it's not necessarily easier for native speakers, because in most cases both prepositions are valid. I'd say you'd do best to look for the most parallel case you can find and follow it. The one rule of thumb I can think of is that if it is a type of administrative entity that partitions a larger administrative entity, use "of" (counties of X province, Departments of France). - Jmabel ! talk 19:11, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, Jmabel. Kind regards! Alavense (talk) 19:49, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
@Alavense: Also, if it's something that could easily move elsewhere, it is usually "in" (automobiles in France). Also, "people of France" typically would mean someone connected to France, no matter where they are at the moment; "people in France" would mean people in France at the moment, no matter how casual their connection to France. I haven't looked, but "people in France" might be a subcat of "people of France", but not vice versa, and "people of France" could easily be a parent category of a category for an individual person, but "people in France" could not be. - Jmabel ! talk 19:54, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

Their Creative Commons license for the restoration is irrevocable. It's in use so I imagine a courtesy deletion request would be denied. Abzeronow (talk) 19:38, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
That's what I'm guessing, but you never know with courtesy deletions. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:41, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
I also doubt their restoration claim. Applying some standard filters to an old image does not create anything original. Ruslik (talk) 19:41, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
Perhaps the best that the uploader can hope for here is to use something along the lines of {{Licensed PD-Art}} for their "restoration", but I agree with those posting above that it's quite stretch for the uploader to try and claim a new copyright was generated by their efforts. They also need to understand that accusing Commons, Wikipedia, or the WMF of "piracy" like they seem to have been doing in the discusison at en:WP:MCQ and believing that Commons owes them some form of compensation is not going to get them very far in trying to resolve this matter. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:53, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
  • Governments have legal power to do so and occasionally have restored copyright of copyright expired works. Individual users have no legal ability to revoke a free license which they have specifically authorized. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 19:55, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
It may help to "recognise" their claim to an original work and revert the image to the original CC-by-SA licence, just to calm the situation down. While there is a sliver of an argument regarding the cropping in particular being a "creative act", there is none regarding their publication of the image under licence on Wikipedia. JimKillock (talk) 08:44, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
They claim to have retouched it (though no specific information about what aspects or how), not just cropped it. Depending on those details, those might be protectable in this derivative-work and therefore the CC nature of this file is legitimate even though the original is PD. DMacks (talk) 14:06, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
Noting for the record the uploader has now made multiple unambiguous legal threats on enwiki against various editors there related to this image. DMacks (talk) 14:13, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, good block there in enwiki. They're sadly mistaken if they believe they will get any kind of monetary compensation for the image from WMF. I'm also skeptical about their claim of restoration but I'm inclined to leave the license as it is as it accurately describes a public domain photograph that has been restored. Abzeronow (talk) 16:31, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
If it helps there are now two versions of the PD poscard uploaded, version one and version two that can be cropped and retouched if preferred. There is a bit of damage to the face on these. JimKillock (talk) 20:07, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
I did advise them to be careful with respect to en:WP:NLT because it seem as if they were moving closer and closer to violating it with every new post they made. Not sure if they saw what I posted or did see it and decided to continue on anyway, but they had entered en:WP:IDHT territory long before that final post and probably would've ended up blocked for some other reason if they were allowed to continue on. For all the time they spent posting on English Wikipedia about that image, they don't seem to have ever tried to resolve things on Commons despite being advised to do so many times. Perhaps, they will do so now. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:08, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

The uploader says on their en:Wikipedia talk page:

The version I uploaded is a high-resolution scan of the original photograph... The cropping and digital editing process, aimed at highlighting this specific subject, was conducted by myself, thus constituting my own novel work. The presence of the iPhone bar at the bottom of the image, a result of the cropping process from a screenshot on my phone, attests to the modern effort involved in creating this specific version for educational and historical purposes [...] the derivative work I've created—through scanning, cropping, and editing—represents a contemporary creative effort.

The information by Jeff G. is about adding text to Wikipedia. This site is commons and it is a media repository. You can upload as many images and videos of your Hotels as you wish. But you have to use a free license for every upload. If the images have not been taken by yourself, but by a photographer, you will need to buy the full publishing rights from the photographer and you need to document that you own the rights by VRT (<- read the linked page). A free license means that every one can use the fotos for free, inlcuding other hotels using the fotos for their own PR. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 17:59, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

Category removal

How do I remove a category from an image I am trying to remove the tag "files that need updating" on File:Paul 2024 path.png? 2003 LN6 21:51, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

@2003 LN6: the category is from the Current tag which apparently is part of the template you are using. Abzeronow (talk) 21:56, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
@2003 LN6: The file File:Paul 2024 path.png uses the {{WPTC track map}} template. That template automatically shows {{Current}} until you set an "end" date parameter in addition to the "start" date parameter. —RP88 (talk) 21:58, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

Advise on content posted by user without account

Hi there,

I just found out that user YitzhakNat posted a photo that should not be there.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_single_mother_and_her_son_visiting_the_Rembrandtplein_in_Amsterdam_(P055042-886359).jpg

I would like to delete this photo, because in the caption it contains the names of the subjects. This could cause discomfort for the child depicted in the photo.

I wanted to connect with the user YitzhakNat, but he does not have any account.

Please advise on how to proceed.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards, Marzia Cosenza MarziaCosenza (talk) 12:41, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

@MarziaCosenza: Hi, and welcome. YitzhakNat (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log does in fact have an account. OTOH, I can't see a way to identify the child in File:A single mother and her son visiting the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam (P055042-886359).jpg, other than by first names of the child and mother, as the child's back is turned. Please use internal links like that.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:32, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
@MarziaCosenza: Hi, The names are in the metadata of the photograph. If the names were the only problem with this photo, they could be removed from the Commons copy with some work on the metadata, but it would not be of much use to do that only here on Commons if they are still freely distributed by the European Commission and elsewhere. But considering your username I suppose that you can have them removed from the E.C. website also or maybe it's already done. Anyway, it seems that the terms of use of the E.C. website for this particular photo are not compatible with the policy of Commons and the photo may need to be deleted from Commons. The terms of use of the E.C. website state: "Unless otherwise indicated (e.g. in individual copyright notices), content owned by the EU on this website is licensed under the [...] CC BY 4.0 licence." The specific copyright notice for this particular photo reads: "European Union, 2022 Scopes : Information and education only". -- Asclepias (talk) 14:44, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
It is now "Mother and son" instead of name in description. They are still in exif metadata. YitzhakNat (talk) 16:50, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

How to download

I want to use a photo of a painting, both of which are in the public domain, in cover art for a self-published book. How do I download the Wikimedia file so I can upload it to my account with the publisher?

The file is The Seven Works of Mercy-Caravaggio. The book is a book of poetry about mortality and the examined life, and one of the poems is about the painting. Jwincronin (talk) 14:28, 12 April 2024 (UTC)

@Jwincronin: There is no file with exactly that name. You could mean anything in Category:The Seven Works of Mercy by Caravaggio (Naples).
You would download it exactly the way you download any other image from a website. Typically this means a right-click and "Save image as...". The only possible difference is that the file page itself does not usually show the highest-resolution version of the image, and you will want to click on that to get the high-res version so that the latter is what you download. - Jmabel ! talk 14:58, 12 April 2024 (UTC)

How do I upload files/documents from ICTY cases?

Title says it all, really. I don't want to get hit with a copyvio, so I want to see if I can upload documents and filings from ICTY cases as they are (in .doc format) to Commons. (For reference, I checked and I don't think UN docs are protected by copyright.)

How do I upgrade a file from JPG to SVG on the same file page?

When I try to upload a new svg version of this file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KIWI_logo.jpg I get this error: File extension ".jpg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/svg+xml). Is there a way to rename the file page so it accepts the svg file as a new version, or do I need to create a new file page? Mr Democracy (talk) 07:51, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

@Mr Democracy: I don't think it's possible to rename a file so as to change its extension, and even if it were that would definitely be contrary to our policy on file renaming. So you'll need to upload the SVG version as a new file. Then you can use the {{Vector version available}} template on the old file page to link to the new one. --bjh21 (talk) 12:12, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

Copyright for photos found on news website

Can I upload photos on WikiMedia found on news websites?

What will be the copyright category?

Will mentioning the name of the news website as author/photographer sufficient? Kawrno Baba (talk) 06:04, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

@Kawrno Baba: Short answer: no.
Longer answer: while it is possible that there are files on a news website that are eligible for Commons, they are few and far between. Commons accepts only files that are either in the public domain or free-licensed. It is unusual for a news website to host any significant number of photos that fall in either category, though of course there are exceptions: e.g. a news site might use a U.S. government photo that is in the public domain (unlike most governments, the U.S. federal government places all creative work its employees do as part of their jobs immediately in the public domain), or they might make use of a third-party photo that has been free-licensed (though probably half of such turn out already to be on Commons). Generally, unless you really know what you are doing, news websites are a poor place to look for freely reusable photos. - Jmabel ! talk 06:14, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. These two articles are too long for my query. Can you please summarise according to my query?
I want to upload a photo of a person. How do I know if the photo 'can be used by anybody'?
Especially, in my country copyright issues are rarely acknowledged, so there is no clear copyright declaration about contents. There is no declaration of copyright status in my country as WikiMedia classifies distinctly. Things are either stated 'copyright protected', or not. The photos that do not say 'copyright protected' are free to use with proper declaration of source, especially for news websites. Kawrno Baba (talk) 06:49, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
The answer to a question does not change, if you ask again: No. You write about "your country", but you do not say, which country that would be. It doesn't matter. How many countrys are ignoring copyright, Commons abides to copyright. To upload an image you need a proof, that is is pd or free. If as you say, websites in your country do not tell if an image is pd or free (only that it is not free, or do not tell at all) you do not have a proof. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 11:40, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
@Kawrno Baba: without knowing what country you are from it's hard to argue this, but I am not aware of any country in the world where the legal situation is what you describe. It is (quite) possible that you live in a country where these laws are rarely enforced. In that case, I guess you could have a personal website unrelated to Commons that is hosted in your country and ignores the laws.
The attitude that you can't be bothered to educate yourself on the topic and want people to give you definitive answers to vague questions simply won't cut it here. We are all volunteers. If you have a specific question about a specific third-party photo on a specific site, someone here probably can answer it for you without you bothering to educate yourself. However, other than that, if you aren't willing to develop at least a moderate understanding of copyright and free-licensing, please only upload pictures you took yourself that are not pictures of other people's copyrighted or potentially copyrightable work. - Jmabel ! talk 15:21, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
The other person answered perfectly. It was sufficient.
I am more of a case basis person. The given two articles are screaming TLDR. I don't see why it's wrong to learn from an experienced person rather than reading the original source.
And my country is Bangladesh. Copyright laws are rarely enforced here. (I am not proud of it.)
And thanks to both of you, I got what I came for. Kawrno Baba (talk) 15:45, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
@Kawrno Baba: Since those laws are on the books and Bangladesh is a member of the Berne Convention, Univ. Copyright Convention, and World Trade Organization, we have to follow them. See COM:Bangladesh.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:36, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

A copyright rule I am not sure I understood correctly

Per Category:Stamps of Greece, "Modern stamps of this country are not in public domain or their status is unknown. They are protected by international copyright laws at least until 70 years after author's death. [...] Please do not upload photographs or scans of stamps of this country". Does that mean that I am not allowed to upload photos of my post-1970 stamps, even though both the stamps and the photos are mine? Deiadameian (talk) 19:02, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

@Deiadameian: Correct, physically owning an object doesn't give you the copyright to it. The copyright would belong to the designers and engravers, and since post-1970 is after 1953, those stamps are in still copyright. Abzeronow (talk) 19:04, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

Well, one information that was not specified in her question above is that the user is visually impaired and interacts with websites through specialized voice software. Help pages on the topic of image use have a lot of details and rely in part on boxes, formats, visual clues. We do not seem to have something that explains the very basics in easy text. That is probably inevitable. This could be a particular type of situation where wording it a different way could actually be of much help. Or maybe we should just tell the user that it's an impossible task.
Another issue is this. The user wishes to contribute to Commons, if that is possible. She manages to take pictures with her phone and to upload them to Commons. Which is already good and I suppose it requires effort and tenacity given her condition. She received messages telling her to add categories and better descriptions. The problem is that when photos are on Commons, including her own photos, she cannot see them well enough and Commons has no feature like the "alt" feature that can give a textual description. I suppose that one obvious thing can be to suggest to her that in the future she writes precise descriptions immediately when she uploads. However, that doesn't help with other images on Commons. Can textual descriptions be read by text-reading software wherever the thext is located in description pages, e.g. inside the information template and a language template? @Jmabel: I know that you are much more familiar than me with accessibility questions. Is there advice you can share? What options, if any, or practical ways, are available to visually impaired users to interact more easily with Commons? -- Asclepias (talk) 23:21, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
@Asclepias: is there some way I should have known when answering that this was a visually impaired person trying to work with images?
User:DrMel supposedly had a whole team of people through https://www.bemyeyes.com/ wanting to work on this sort of thing, but I don't think anything ever actually happened. It is possible that contacting bemyeyes directly might help, but I have no idea how much support is available in French. - Jmabel ! talk 23:57, 15 April 2024 (UTC)

Picture of methylammonium formate

I recently wrote an article on methylammonium formate. Today, I found an image online that used the exact same specific type of ball-and-stick notation as the rest of Wikipedia generally uses (by the way that notation is awesome and I want to know where to use it). I downloaded the file, and then tried to upload it, but it said I had to agree that I own the copyright to that image, which I do not. It also said that I can only publish my own works. My only other option other than to upload a file from my computer was to search it on Wikimedia, and there was only one image that popped up that had nothing to do with methylammonium formate. Tickbeat (talk) 15:03, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

@Tickbeat: Hi, and welcome. Where did you find that image online? See also COM:NETC.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:10, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
So I looked back, and:
1. The image turned out to be from Wikidocs.
2. It was a picture of methylamine, not methylammonium formate. In fact, I can find precisely zero images of specifically methylammonium formate. If I can figure out what software produces images of molecules that bare the specific type of ball-and-stick notation that Wikipedia frequently uses in their images, (if you know, you know), then I can just make my own image, in which case it will actually have been made by me, and then I won't have that problem. But I don't know how to do that, or whether or not I need to. Tickbeat (talk) 15:13, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
@Tickbeat: Commons talk:WikiProject Chemistry seems a good place to ask for suggestions. (Or you might contact users who create chemistry illustrations, for example Benjah-bmm27.) -- Asclepias (talk) 16:05, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
How do I contact a user? Tickbeat (talk) 16:58, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
On the talk page of the user. For example, if other users want to talk to you, they can go to your talk page: User talk:Tickbeat. It's the same thing to talk to another user, but with the username of that user instead of yours. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:57, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
There are a few different "standard" types of ball&stick. If you can identify a specific example/style you like, I can tell you some software that can do it. We do have images you could cut'n'paste together (as long as you cite:), such as File:Methylammonium-3D-balls.png and File:Sodium-formate-3D-balls.png. But a word of caution: these types of diagrams of salts can be misleading, so there is a risk that making something "not really correct, but graphically high quality" could reinforce the wrongness to others. DMacks (talk) 18:14, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
The pictures of methylammonium and sodium-formate actually capture perfectly the style I was referring to. The only thing about them is that the hydrogen atoms and carbon atoms are the same size, which I have seen differently in other ball&stick notations, such that hydrogen atoms are smaller than carbon atoms. Airing on the side of scientific accuracy, every element of the notation in the two images you linked me two are perfect, except for the sizes of the atoms. The sizes of the atoms should be proportional to their atomic mass by some arbitrary decided factor. Tickbeat (talk) 20:21, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Alternative versions of file

Hi, I'm looking to upload a new spiral version of the geologic time scale for use on Wiki. I have three versions (one based on the ICS colouring, and two alternative colours schemes that are colour-blind friendly). Each version has a light & dark variant where the text colour is inverted for areas over transparent zones. There are six SVG files in total. Aside from giving them a consistent naming scheme and uploading each as a separate file, is there the possibility of uploading an alternate version based on the light/dark variants? I'm not sure I understand your question. Yes, all six are presumably welcome, but I can't make any real sense of "is there the possibility of uploading an alternate version based on the light/dark variants?"

file information contradicts itself

@Elinruby: Good eye! I've fixed the problem by removing the reference to the modern artist also named Giovanni Guida from File:A Barbary Pirate by Giovanni Guida.jpg and then edited the wikidata item for the painting (d:Q123822220) to change the creator to Giovanni Guida (1837–1895) instead of Giovanni Guida (1992-). —RP88 (talk) 06:15, 16 April 2024 (UTC

Yes, the source link specified on the file page for the painting does identify the artist as the Giovanni Guida who was born in 1837, not the one born in 1992. The style also matches the other painting we have from him at Category:Giovanni Guida (1837-1895). —RP88 (talk) 06:31, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

On removal of DI without explanation

Hi. I have recently tagged an image (File:草尾毅.jpg) for CSD F5 - missing permission. A source is listed, but I cannot find any evidence that the photograph is licensed under CC-BY 2.0. An IP user keeps removing the notice, but not giving evidence that the image is licensed. I cannot find any CC-BY (or any free license) notice on the source, or any other possible source. I have added the notice back, after which it was removed again. I don't want to edit war, but there is still no evidence of permission. What should I do? Thanks, WhoAteMyButter (talk) 04:32, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

In the source a different image is shown anyway. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 06:14, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
I seemed to have missed that entirely - apologies! Although even then, that's {{Di-no source}}; still DI. I suspect that if I were to tag it as such, it would be reverted by the same IP. Where would I go to get this resolved and/or ensure that the source & copyright status is clarified? WhoAteMyButter (talk) 06:19, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
@WhoAteMyButter: If someone objects to speedy deletion, the right solution is usually to open a full deletion request. See Commons:Deletion requests. For a single file, using the "Nominate for deletion" in the tools is the easiest way to do this. --bjh21 (talk) 09:53, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
@WhoAteMyButter: You can tag it for speedy deletion with a link to one of the non-free previous internet publications, e.g. IMDb. If the user still removes the tag without opening a regular DR, you can ask for help at COM:AN/U. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:57, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

Airliners.net

Unless I am mistaken, photographer Eduard Marmet has released ALL his aircraft images on airliners.net for use here on Wikimedia. Currently Wikimedia has 824 of his images uploaded, but there are over 3,200 on airliners.net, and I am particularly interested in one of those that are not yet uploaded. I have tried to find a way to bring it on board, but have failed. Please help.

The image I want is https://www.airliners.net/photo/Freedom-Airlines/Convair-580/192675

Images from Eduard at airliners.net already uploaded include; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Luftwaffe_Hansa_Jet_at_Basle_-_May_1984.jpg

I have found this template from 2011, but do not know how to proceed from here. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:EduardMarmet

@Abzeronow: Sorry for replying late. I am in Germany and it is pretty much difficult for me to have my laptop charged (since I missed bringing an Indian connector), and thus having very little access to it. I had a look at the ticket and I feel I can reproduce the text here. Someone wrote to Eduard that I am specifically seeking your permission to use this image:
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0487023/M/ and the permissions follow: The online encycoppeida Wikipedia is a great thing which should always be supported. Of course I give you the permission to include the photo into your article under the terms and conditions stated in your request below. I own the copyright to the image mentioned in your email letter and found at: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0487023/M/ I grant permission to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later
I do not see any basis for {{EduardMarmet}} in the ticket, and since its creator is blocked across Wikimedia sites, it should be investigated.─ Aafī (talk) 19:04, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

Images relating to state legislation, Australia

I would like to find out about uploading images (for a wikipedia article) relating to state legislation (on a particular topic) in Australia. The images are either individual pages of documents available but obscure, from the internet, or images of pages/maps not available on the internet, such as from the state archives. Reasons I'd like to be able to use them are that they would provide information that is (1) very difficult to find or cross-reference or (2) not available to the public if I were only to reference it. Thanks anyway. J5hbx (talk) 22:37, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
J5hbx, that's likely because Jim.henderson deactivated the option to receive email from brand-new users ("Allow emails from brand-new users") on their preferences. Yeah, contacting them on their talkpage will probably solve. Regards, RodRabelo7 (talk) 22:44, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

Are images in the russian wikipedia CC?

I am doing a project involving some soviet historical actors, for wich portraits are available in the russian wikipedia but don't seem to appear in Wikimedia CC itself or any other wikipedia language.

I was wondering if these images should still be safe to use (in a non-commercial manner and giving credit) or if the russian wikipedia project has different standars that could explain the difference. Thank you very much for any perspective. Xandru4 (talk) 06:10, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

@Xandru4: Content hosted by Commons needs to comply with Commons:Licensing under US copyright law and under the copyright laws of the country of first publication (which could be Russia in this case). In addition, some local Wikipedia host fair use or non-free content that is not allowed by Commons, and Commons doesn't accept any licenses that place any type of restriction on commercial or derivative use. It will be much easier for someone to give you a less general answer if you can provide a link the files you're asking about. If they're uploaded locally to Russian Wikipedia, you can link to them from this discussion by simply adding the language^prefix ":ru:" before each file's name (for example, [[:ru:File:Filename.Fileextension]]) and then adding them to this discussion. If you can't get that to work just provide a link to the URL addresses for the files' pages. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:47, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
@Xandru4: Bonjour,
Cette politique se trouve sur la page ru:Википедия:Критерии добросовестного использования.
-- Asclepias (talk) 13:49, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
Xandru4 (talk) 20:34, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi, I was not sure that these were related to Wikidata. I'm still seeing the 'recolored' image in the category's infobox; it's the same in another browser so it does not seem to be a cache issue. Or does it take some time for the Wikidata change to manifest itself in Commons? --K.e.coffman (talk) 08:29, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
@K.e.coffman: Hi, Yes, the update of the display can take some time. It is possible to simply wait until it updates. A null edit on the category page may speed up its update there. Which I just did. The displayed image changed for me. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:35, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

The user in question has also made other really bad speedy nominations wrongly invoking F10 for files of regular contributors, e.g. [2]. Or requesting deletions with the no permission tag when there's no obvious reason, e.g. [3]. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:50, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Adding location info from EXIF data

Hello! How do I call a bot like DschwenBot to add location data contained within the EXIF data of a photograph I have uploaded? It'd be a bit more convenient if I could call a bot to add this data. Thank you for your help! Albeit simple (talk) 04:13, 30 April 2024 (UTC)

@Albeit simple: Hello,
  • DschwenBot is not in activity anymore, apparently because of some technical requirement of Wikimedia.
  • When that bot was in activity, it was called by the insertion of the template GPS EXIF in the description page of the file.
  • If there are no geographical coordinates in the EXIF data of the photos, they cannot be added from there.
  • If photos have geographical coordinates in their EXIF data and if the tool Upload Wizard is used for uploading them, the location templates are added automatically when the files are uploaded.
  • If you have the coordinates, you could add the location template manually.

Using the "Articles near me"

I need help to understand how commons treats this Articles near me feature that the Wikimedia Map have on several pages, including this category page for city Wikimedia commons - Tromsø

  • Opening the page
  • button to enlarge map.
  • Find the area to search within, for "Articles in this area"
  • Click the button, and…nothing happens!?

I have checked on beforehand, that there would be thing, buildings, landmarks and streets in the citycentre depicted through pictures, articles etc. These do not show up on street map as expected. WHY

thank you for reading this request - Mathias -Ahoy (talk) 09:41, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean. We are on commons here, not on Wikimedia map. Is the articles near me a gadget? Paradise Chronicle (talk) 09:17, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
@Paradise Chronicle: The editor Mathias -Ahoy is referring to the "Show nearby articles" feature of the enlarged version of maps provided by mw:Help:Extension:Kartographer, accessible from Commons categories which have locations in their {{Wikidata Infobox}}. The problem seen by this editor comes from the meaning of "articles" (i.e. the default namespace, which on Commons are called "Galleries"). In this case the feature is working correctly because while Commons has many files and categories near to Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum in Tromsø, Commons doesn't have any Galleries with locations close to Tromsø (Commons does have a Gallery for Tromsø at Tromsø, but it doesn't have a location). Mathias -Ahoy, as an example that shows what I am describing, try zooming the map on the category Category:Eiffel Tower and then clicking "Show nearby articles". You will see nearby Commons galleries, including Tour Eiffel, Les Invalides, and Hôtel du ministre des Affaires étrangères. Note that these are not categories or files, they are in the default namespace, which on the Wikipedias are "Articles" but on Commons are "Galleries". —RP88 (talk) 09:50, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Trying to upload picture of MY OWN collection personally signed bills by Mary Ellen Withrow

Hello I took pictures of my own collection collector signed bills by treasure Mary Ellen Withrow. I own the bills and I took the pictures myself and keep getting copyright errors. These are ultra low number serial bills with the same numbers, already high value but also courtesy signed by Mary Ellen Withrow. Her signature is public domain. They are in a treasury holder with her favorite quote Yesterday is a canceled check. Tomorrow is a promissory note, but today is cash. I think it adds intrinsic value to her wiki. But have tried many times to add it. MoonwHale1 (talk) 00:16, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi MoonwHale1. It's not clear whether you're having problems uploading files to Commons or whether you having problems adding files to some Wikipedia article.
If you're having problems uploading files to Commons, then perhaps you can provide some more information for reference. Have you already posted this pictures somewhere else online? Generally, when you take a picture of something created by something else, the copyright status of whatever your photographing also needs to be considered in addition to the copyright of the picture you yourself has taken. If by "bills" you mean currency, then you might want to take a look at COM:Currency because copyright laws can differ from country to country when it comes to currency. Owning the bills yourself doesn't necessarily mean they're no longer under copyright protection, and Commons can only host images of the bills if they no longer or never have been under copyright protection, or they've been released by their copyright holder under an acceptable free license. If, however, you mean something else by "bills", then please clarify.
Now, if you're having problems adding files to a Wikipedia article, you're going to need to discuss that on the article's corresponding talk page because that's not really something related to Commmons per se. Commons is mainly concerned with the licensing of the content it hosts, but the inclusion of such content in articles (i.e. the encyclopedic relevance of the content to the article's subject) is left up to each Wikipedia to decide. Even if the content is fine from a copyright standpoint, you might still need to establish a consensus for its inclusion in the article from an ecyclopedic standpoint. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:50, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
Also, it would help a lot to say exactly what upload tool (URL or name of app) you are using, and exactly what error message you are getting. - Jmabel ! talk 05:54, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
@MoonwHale1: you triggered an automated warning by trying to upload small resolution files as a new user. This filter is not capable of any complicated decisions. If these are USD bills then uploading the images should be OK: Commons:Currency#United_States_of_America. Try to upload the images using Special:UploadWizard. MKFI (talk) 06:14, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

That's kind of a convoluted link. Are we simply talking about File:GeneralJamesGettys-1024.jpg? And what errors are you referring to? - Jmabel ! talk 13:52, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

Uploading photos

How can I upload photos from iphone, and are exepted if I do screen shots I garantee they are photos that i did but i have them through years and it is more easier to do screen shots and then send FOR “Traditional Albanian food photography competition 25 March till 25 April Rajmonda ThG (talk) 11:57, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

@Rajmonda ThG: That is rather unclear. You might do better to ask in Albanian using one of the means listed at Commons:Traditional Albanian food photography competition - 2024/Description. - Jmabel ! talk 13:59, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
Rajmonda ThG, you might ask here in Albanian and we'll try to help with your query.

Problem I can't solve: Commons:Traditional Albanian food photography competition - 2024/Description (in English) links to Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2023/Përshkrimi (different year) for the Albanian equivalent. It's apparently stitched together by some translation "magic" that I don't know how to edit. - Jmabel ! talk 14:03, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

Notifying Klein Muçi. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:15, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
Asclepias, thank you!
@Jmabel, they don't appear linked to me. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your issue. Or maybe someone already fixed it? — Klein Muçi (talk) 14:40, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
@Klein Muçi: sorry, it's a little trickier than I thought. On Commons:Traditional Albanian food photography competition - 2024/Description, click on the link labeled "shqip". It links overtly to Commons:Traditional_Albanian_food_photography_competition_-_2024/Description/sq, but the page title is "Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2023/Përshkrimi." (I'm not used to having the page title differ this much from the URL, so I missed that the first time.) So it's the title that is wrong, not the URL. - Jmabel ! talk 18:42, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
Ah! I see. No worries, I'll fix that. I must have missed that too then because I didn't notice anything unusual the first time I checked. Good catch! - Klein Muçi (talk) 18:45, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

Renaming a page

Hi, I see that I need to "Move" a page in order to have it renamed, but am not seeing where/how to do this. Can you please help? thank you! LMI Digital (talk) 16:34, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

It should be on the right of the History tab on the file (it might be slightly different if you use the latest Vector skin which I do not). Abzeronow (talk) 17:40, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
I am using the Vector 2022 skin and with me it's in the drop down menu of "More" to the right of the history button of the toolbar. You can find more information on moving here

Upload school paper from 1948 to Hannibal Wisconsin wiki page.

I have a hardcopy paper from a grade school class from 1948 to include on the Hannibal Wisconsin page. I found the paper at my parents house. Two of my aunts are listed in the list of authors within the paper. I'd like to upload it the the Hannibal Wisconsin page, but I'm running into issues with copyright, as well as, pdf files not being acceptable any longer. There is no way at this point to get permission from anyone involved since, most likely, they have all passed away by now. GLDay (talk) 21:00, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

Two things that I think matter here. Firstly, you wouldn't own the copyright to the paper since it was written by your aunts. So it makes sense you'd be having issues with that. Second, and more importantly IMO, grade school papers aren't in scope for Commons anyway. Let alone allowable in Wikipedia articles. At least I don't think they are. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong on that, but it doesn't really matter because of the copyright issues anyway. --Adamant1 (talk) 21:25, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
Might be in scope, hard to say without looking.
U.S. in that era => something like this was almost certainly not copyrighted and absolutely certainly such a copyright would not have been renewed, so it's PD.
People dying actually does not affect the copyright deeply. If no one is named specifically for intellectual property rights in a will, those rights pass on with the residue of the estate.
If everyone from a grade school in 1948 is dead, that is rather unfortunate. If alive, they'd presumably be in their 80s. - Jmabel ! talk 02:01, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
My bad. I forgot about the probable lack of a copyright notice. --Adamant1 (talk) 02:04, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

It it possible to upload the Yahoo Labs logo to the Commons? I am unsure about if this would be appropriate or not because Yahoo Labs is discontinued. Thank you! K.O.518 (talk) 01:14, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

@K.O.518: It really depends on which logo your talking about, it's the logo on their Twitter account then it's probably fine due to being below the threshold of originality. There's already a bunch of other one's like it on here in Category:Yahoo! logos. --Adamant1 (talk) 01:26, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
Oh, ok thank you! K.O.518 (talk) 01:42, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
